Dental Hygiene for Kids
Many people do not realize how important it is to take care of baby teeth. They assume that they will fall out anyway, and it is more important to take care of your adult teeth. This is inaccurate. It is incredibly crucial to take care of baby teeth, as keeping them healthy can lead to strong and healthy adult teeth. Helping young kids create good dental hygiene habits will also lead to good hygiene habits with their adult teeth. Here at Pony Express Dental, we want all of our patients to have strong, healthy teeth. This begins, however, at a young age. We believe in strong dental hygiene for kids, and below are some things that we highly recommend doing.
Bi-Annual Visits to the Dentist
We recommend bringing them in for regular dental cleanings and checkups for each child at the age of three. We can check for cavities or signs of decay at each cleaning appointment. We take digital x-rays at least once a year, which is highly beneficial for children. Over the years, we can watch how their adult teeth emerge and help them avoid overcrowding. We will also professionally clean each child’s teeth during their checkup.
Kids generally have the highest amount of cavities. This is because they are still developing good oral hygiene habits. We can teach them and physically show them how to brush as we carefully clean their teeth correctly. As a pediatric dental office, we know how to work with kids. We delicately remove plaque and polish their teeth. With each step in the process, we explain what will happen so that they will understand. We show them our tools and do what we can to help them feel more in control.
Bringing kids to a bi-annual cleaning and checkup can be nerve-wracking, but we do everything we can to make sure each child feels comfortable and safe. Professional cleaning is one of the best ways to help kids with hygiene, but there are other things that you can do as well.
Fluoride: Fluoride is a white sticky substance that strengthens the enamel of teeth and helps them fight off cavities. We recommend fluoride treatment for young kids. You can find fluoride in some toothpaste and mouthwashes, and we recommend that you use one of those when helping your child brush.
Sealants: Any patient can get sealants, but they are more common for children. A dental sealant acts as a cap for the tooth’s crown and literally seals off bacteria from entering. The sealant reduces the number of cavities kids have and helps them maintain strong baby teeth. The application of sealants is painless and quick. They can eat what they want and have full use of their mouth.
At-Home Dental Hygiene Ideas for Kids
There are some things that kids can do at home to help them maintain good oral hygiene.
- Brush at least twice a day in a circular motion. It is also a good idea for them to have an electric toothbrush. Help your child and make sure they reach the back molars.
- Help them learn how to floss and teach them the importance of daily flossing.
- Use a mouthwash with fluoride in it.
- Teach them not to open any packaging with their teeth or tear tape. This can lead to broken teeth.
- Help them avoid excessive amounts of sugar. Sugar is the number one cause of cavities.
- Have them drink plenty of water.
