A Brief History of Daybreak

Daybreak is a master-planned community developed by Kennecott Land, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, on land that had long been associated with the Kennecott Copper mining operations in the Salt Lake Valley. Development began in the early 2000s with a bold vision: create a walkable, sustainability-focused neighborhood built around natural open spaces, connected trails, and a genuine sense of community. The centerpiece of that vision was Oquirrh Lake, a 52-acre freshwater lake constructed to serve as the social and recreational heart of the development. The first residents moved in around 2004, and the community quickly earned national recognition for its thoughtful urban planning and quality of life.

Over the following two decades, Daybreak grew into one of the most celebrated master-planned communities in the western United States, ultimately planned to house over 20,000 homes at full build-out. The neighborhood expanded in carefully designed phases, each adding new parks, schools, retail areas, and trail connections.
