A Brief History of Saratoga Springs

The story of Saratoga Springs begins with the natural warm springs near the mouth of the Jordan River on the western shore of Utah Lake. Mormon explorers sailed along the lake’s shores as early as December 1847, and the springs quickly became known for their reputed medicinal properties. In 1884, German immigrant John Beck purchased more than 1,000 acres surrounding these springs and developed what became known as Beck’s Saratoga Springs Resort. The destination grew into one of the most popular attractions in Utah, featuring indoor plunge pools, a dance pavilion, amusement rides, and a celebrated waterslide before eventually being sold to residential developers in 1995. The name Saratoga Springs draws a direct parallel to the celebrated resort in New York, and that legacy of hospitality still defines the community today.

In December 1997, the surrounding area was officially incorporated as the city of Saratoga Springs. What followed was one of the most dramatic population booms in modern Utah history. Between 2000 and 2010, the city grew by an astonishing 1,672 percent, earning the title of the fastest-growing city in Utah for that decade. 

Today, Saratoga Springs is home to nearly 40,000 residents, spanning more than 21 square miles from Pelican Point on the western shore of Utah Lake northward toward Camp Williams.
